ATMOWELL® has been specifically developed for use in livestock housing and contains a scientifically proven urease inhibitor. By spraying it on the barn floor in a targeted way, the amount of ammonia released is reduced significantly. This improves the air inside the barn and reduces the annual emissions of livestock farms.

EFFECT & APPLICATION

______

How and where are ammonia emissions produced in livestock housing?

The gas ammonia (NH3) is released due to the splitting of urea caused by the microbial enzyme urease. In livestock housing, this process begins once urine (main source of the urea) and feces (main source of the urease enzyme) come into contact. The walking surfaces in the housing are therefore a significant emission source.

What effect does ATMOWELL® have?

The most important active ingredient in ATMOWELL® is the ‘urease inhibitor’. This blocks the binding sites of the urease enzyme that are relevant for the splitting of the urea. The break-down of urea is inhibited and considerably delayed.

Inhibiting the urease leads to a significant reduction in the amount of ammonia released in the housing directly at the source where urine and feces mix.

How is ATMOWELL® used?

Firstly, ATMOWELL® is dissolved in water by a dosing-mixing module. The ATMOWELL® water mixture is then applied onto the walking surfaces in the barn by a suitable spraying device. This application needs to be carried out once a day to ensure the reduction effect is constant. It can be applied in both existing buildings and new builds.

______

We intend to reduce ammonia emissions in Germany by 29%

Under an international agreement, the EU member states have committed to reducing the amount of ammonia released by 2030.

Figure: Production of NH3 emissions in Germany since 2005 and goal for 2030 (Vos et al. 2022)

33% of ammonia losses come from livestock housing

Livestock farming is important in the production of foodstuffs, and the release of ammonia is a natural part of this. Almost a third of the ammonia is directly produced in livestock housing.

Figure: Ammonia emissions in Germany according to source category (Vos et al. 2022)

ATMOWELL® can reduce 58% of ammonia emissions inside the barn

Using ATMOWELL® considerably reduces the annual amount of ammonia released directly in the barn, as clearly shown by investigations on dairy farms.

Figure: Decrease in amount of ammonia released annually thanks to ATMOWELL® in two dairy cattle facilities (Bobrowski et al. 2021)

FOR THESE REASONS ATMOWELL®

GOOD FOR PEOPLE AND ANIMALS. GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT.

______
  • Reduced ammonia pollution for people, animals and nature
  • Better air quality in and outside the barn
  • Increased fertilising value of the slurry
  • Flexible solution for existing and new buildings
  • Compatibility with biogas systems

Why should ammonia emissions in livestock housing be kept to a minimum?

Livestock housing is one of the main sources of ammonia emissions. If an excessive amount is released, this can cause nitrogen compounds to accumulate in the environment and lead to an increase in particulate pollution. This represents a potential risk, particularly for sensitive natural areas. In addition, increased ammonia concentrations in the air have negative effects on the health and well-being of humans and animals, as well as on the lifespan of technical components inside the barn.

Is the urease inhibitor in ATMOWELL® the same as the active ingredient in fertiliser products?
The urease inhibitor contained in ATMOWELL® differs in its chemical structure from compounds, which are used in stabilised fertilisers available on the market (such as ALZON® neo-N). The selection of the urease inhibitor took place multiple stages with the goal of achieving the greatest effect in livestock housing.
What floors can ATMOWELL® be used on?
The application of ATMOWELL® mixed with water has been proven for use on solid, unlittered floors in livestock housing, particularly walking surfaces. Conclusive data and technical solutions for use in relevant dairy cattle facilities are available.
Does ATMOWELL® have an effect in the slurry storage or in the biogas system?
The urease inhibitor in ATMOWELL® no longer has any inhibiting effect in slurry storage or in biogas systems. The relevant active ingredient is largely broken down within the livestock building already. Reducing the nitrogen losses in the housing allows the nitrogen content of the slurry to be increased, raising the fertilising value of the manure.
Is ATMOWELL® suitable for use in organic farming?
ATMOWELL® contains chemically synthesised compounds. This product feature is currently not in line with the requirements under which livestock farms are to be managed in accordance with the EU regulations on organic production.
What technology is needed to use ATMOWELL® in cattle barns?

For the professional application of ATMOWELL®, an automated dosing, mixing and filling unit is required, which provides the application solution in the prescribed mixing ratio on a daily basis, as well as the associated data. For the subsequent application of the solution to the walking suface, BETEBE GmbH has developed the SmartScraper manure removal system including the integrated spraying device and a related documentation function.
